"...instead of screaming, I ran."

“I had to do something to shake up my life and get back some sense of control and trust in the world and along the way fill the hollow space. I needed to rebel against these negative forces, to scream so loud and for so long that the anger living inside me would evacuate forever. But instead of screaming, I ran.”
 - Gail Kislevitz, First Marathons

Yesterday morning a friend sent this quote to me and said it reminder her of me and how I’ve talked about how running came into my life at the perfect time. It’s not that I think God wanted my marriage to end but I do think God knows how to line your life up perfectly and give you exactly what you need.

  • January 2011 I wasn’t a runner, I was overweight, and out of shape and a shell of the strong girl I once was.
  • January 2012 I had started running just a couple months before, at nearly the end of my 85lb weight loss. I started finding strength - mental and physical - that I forgot existed within. I started remembering what happiness really felt like.
  • January 2013 my world came crashing down… but the prior years had prepared me to withstand. I had gained mental strength from running and found an outlet for all that haunted me – the pain, the anger, the confusion – I ran it out. I had built my support system with a base of long-time friends and a few key new friends whose friendships were perfectly timed.

Do you need to shake up your life? Do you need to rebel against the negative forces? Go for a run. Take a cross fit class. Join the gym. Fitness is an amazing outlet for life. It saved me.

One of my favorite places to run. This route clears my mind.

Gear {on the cheap}

I have two favorite places to buy my running gear: Ross (or TJMaxx or any place similar) and RunningWarehouse.com.

RunningWarehouse.com is amazing for a couple reasons. #1 – FREE TWO DAY SHIPPING. This alone is fabulous. Not only is the shipping free, but it’s two day shipping. #2 Free return shipping. I never buy clothing online unless it’s free shipping to and from (or there is a local store where I can return it). RunningWarehouse has me covered. And #3 is a very recent addition but very important 90 Day No Sweat Return Policy. This new policy saved me on a recent pair of shorts I bought. I ran in them twice and spent the entire time pulling them down bc they kept riding up. When they introduced their policy, they backdated it for any purchases in the 90 days prior to the announcement. I e-mailed them and they sent me a UPS free return label and I sent the shorts back. I simply asked for store credit because I know I’ll make another purchase sometime soon anyways. I always look through their clearance gear and find great priced sale items. I told Andy if he bought the garmin off of my birthday wish list to buy it from Running Warehouse. I love them!

My other favorite place is the discount stores like Ross or TJMaxx.  My mom took me for some early birthday shopping and I loaded up on running gear at Ross the other weekend. Everything she bought me was name brand and under $10 – except for one pair of shorts that were $12.99 (and they were the 2 in 1 compression shorts plus regular shorts). The only downside is no returns if you run in something and it doesn’t fit right (unlike RunningWarehouse).
